Quick answer: In Google Tag Manager, create a trigger for clicks on links containing wa.me or api.whatsapp.com, send them to GA4 as an event such as whatsapp_click, mark it as a key event and import it into Google Ads. Then add a short source code to the prefilled WhatsApp message so you can tell which taps became real conversations, and which ads produced them.

On many Indian small-business websites, the green WhatsApp button is where enquiries actually happen. Visitors would rather send "Hi, price?" than fill in five form fields. Yet Google Ads often reports a handful of conversions a month, because nobody told it the button exists. This walkthrough fixes that with Tag Manager, GA4 and Google Ads, then goes a step further and connects taps to real chats.

Why do WhatsApp enquiries go missing from Google Ads and GA4?

Because a WhatsApp tap leaves your website instead of loading a thank-you page, and most set-ups only count thank-you pages or form submissions. The chat itself happens inside WhatsApp, which your analytics can't see.

The consequences compound:

  • Google Ads optimises towards the minority who fill in forms, which may not be your best customers.
  • Campaigns that bring plenty of WhatsApp enquiries look like failures and get paused.
  • You can't compare keywords or ads on the outcome that matters most.

GA4's enhanced measurement already logs outbound link clicks, and a wa.me link counts as one. That's a start, but it's buried among every other outbound click and isn't marked as a key event, so Google Ads ignores it.

Enable the click variables, then create a "Just Links" trigger that matches WhatsApp URLs. Most WhatsApp buttons are ordinary links to wa.me or api.whatsapp.com.

  1. Enable variables. In Variables, choose Configure and tick Click URL, Click Text and Click Classes.
  2. Create the trigger. Triggers, New, Click: Just Links. Choose "Some Link Clicks" and set Click URL matches RegEx (ignore case):
wa\.me|api\.whatsapp\.com|whatsapp:\/\/send
  1. Name it clearly, for example "Click: WhatsApp link".
  2. Handle non-link buttons. Some chat widgets open WhatsApp with JavaScript rather than a link. If the trigger never fires, use a "Click: All Elements" trigger matching the button's class or ID, or check whether the widget pushes its own dataLayer event.

You rarely need the "Wait for tags" option. GA4 sends events in a way that usually survives the browser handing over to the WhatsApp app.

If the trigger doesn't fire in Preview, check these first:

  • The button points to a widget's redirect URL on another domain, so the pattern never matches.
  • The button sits inside a third-party iframe, which Tag Manager on your page can't see.
  • Your consent banner blocks analytics until the visitor accepts, so accept it before testing.
  • A caching plugin is serving an old page; test in a private window after clearing the cache.

How do you send the click to GA4 as a key event?

Create a GA4 event tag on that trigger, test it, publish, then mark the event as a key event in GA4.

  1. Tag: Google Analytics: GA4 Event. Use your existing Google tag or measurement ID.
  2. Event name: whatsapp_click. Keep it lowercase with underscores.
  3. Parameters: link_url set to {{Click URL}}, and button_location set from Click Classes or Click Text, so you can tell the floating button from the header link.
  4. Test in Preview. Open Tag Assistant, tap each WhatsApp button and confirm the tag fires once per tap.
  5. Check DebugView in GA4 to see the event arrive with its parameters.
  6. Publish the container with a version name such as "WhatsApp click tracking".
  7. Mark it as a key event. In GA4 Admin, under Events, mark whatsapp_click as a key event once it appears, or create the key event by name in advance.

Standard reports can take a day or so to show the new event, so don't panic if it's missing on the first afternoon.

Should the WhatsApp click be a primary conversion in Google Ads?

Start it as secondary if accidental taps are common, and promote it to primary once taps reliably turn into chats. Primary conversions drive bidding; secondary ones are reported but not optimised for.

You have two ways to get the event into Google Ads:

MethodHowGood for
Import from GA4Link GA4 and Google Ads, then Goals, Conversions, New, Import, choose whatsapp_clickSimpler set-up; one definition shared by both tools

Whichever you choose, count "one" conversion per click, not every tap, since people often tap twice. And when deciding primary or secondary:

How can you tell button taps from real conversations?

Compare taps with chats received, and give every chat an identifiable source. A tap is intent; a conversation is a lead.

  • Count weekly. Taps in GA4 against new chats in WhatsApp Business. A big gap suggests accidental taps or people abandoning before sending.
  • Use a prefilled message with a code, so the first message carries its source.
  • Label chats in the WhatsApp Business app (for example "Google", "Meta", "Qualified", "Booked") or in your CRM if you use the API.
  • Send outcomes back. Once you know which chats became customers, import them as offline conversions; our guide to offline conversion tracking explains how.

Manual labelling in the Business app is fine for a few dozen chats a week. Beyond that, the WhatsApp Business Platform connected to a CRM can read the code from the first message and fill in the source field automatically, so nobody has to remember. Our guide to WhatsApp Business API automation covers the set-up and running costs.

How do you pass the ad source into the WhatsApp chat itself?

Add a short reference to the prefilled text in your wa.me link, and set it according to how the visitor arrived. A static version looks like this:

https://wa.me/91XXXXXXXXXX?text=Hi%2C%20I%27d%20like%20a%20quote%20(ref%20G1)

To set the code automatically, a small script on your site can remember the source from the landing page and add it to every WhatsApp link:

const params = new URLSearchParams(location.search);
if (params.get("gclid")) sessionStorage.setItem("src", "G1");
else if (params.get("fbclid")) sessionStorage.setItem("src", "M1");
const src = sessionStorage.getItem("src") || "W1";
document.querySelectorAll('a[href*="wa.me"]').forEach((a) => {
  const url = new URL(a.href);
  const text = url.searchParams.get("text") || "Hi, I have an enquiry";
  url.searchParams.set("text", `${text} (ref ${src})`);
  a.href = url.toString();
});

Customers can delete the code before sending, so treat it as strong evidence rather than proof. Mirror the set-up for Meta by firing a Pixel "Contact" event on the same GTM trigger, with the Meta Conversions API sending a matching server event. Note that click-to-WhatsApp ads skip your website entirely and are measured inside Meta, so this set-up covers website traffic only.

Frequently asked questions

Can GA4 track WhatsApp button clicks?

Yes. Enhanced measurement already records outbound clicks to wa.me links, and a dedicated whatsapp_click event via Tag Manager makes them easy to report and mark as a key event. GA4 records the tap, not the conversation that follows.

Should a WhatsApp click count as a conversion in Google Ads?

Usually yes, because for many Indian businesses it's the main enquiry route. Start it as a secondary conversion if accidental taps are common, and make it primary once taps reliably become chats.

Does tracking still work when WhatsApp opens in the app on mobile?

In most cases. The event fires when the link is tapped, before the phone switches to WhatsApp, and GA4 is designed to send it as the page hands over. Test on real Android and iPhone devices, including in-app browsers such as Instagram's.

How do I know which ad a WhatsApp chat came from?

Add a source code to the prefilled message, set automatically from the landing page URL, and label each chat by its code. For finer detail, use different codes per campaign and record them in your CRM.

Do I need Google Tag Manager to track WhatsApp clicks?

No. You can create a GA4 event from the outbound click event where the link URL contains wa.me, or add code to your site directly. Tag Manager simply makes testing, changes and adding Meta tracking much easier.
