Click-to-WhatsApp ads open a WhatsApp chat instead of sending people to a website. In our Indian client accounts, click-to-message ads like these were usually the cheapest way to get an enquiry, from ₹2.72 per conversation for an awnings business to ₹5.43 for a clothing brand. Low costs depend on sharp creative, a pre-filled message and replies within minutes.
The format suits India particularly well because almost every prospect already has WhatsApp open on their phone. There's no page to load and no form to fill; one tap and they're typing to you. This playbook shows how we set these campaigns up, what they've actually cost, and where they fall short. For how they fit into a wider ads strategy, see our guide to performance marketing in 2026.
What do click-to-WhatsApp ads actually cost?
In our accounts, costs ranged from under ₹3 to over ₹60 per conversation depending mostly on the product's price and how considered the purchase is. Low-ticket, impulse-friendly products sit at the bottom; wedding and other high-commitment services sit higher but still well below many alternatives.
All figures below are lifetime results with Meta's default attribution (7-day click, 1-day view), anonymised by industry and city. "Conversations" are chats started from click-to-message ads, and Meta's figures can combine WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram Direct chats.
| Business (anonymised) | Conversations | Average cost per conversation | Best ad |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home-improvement (awnings) | 153 | ₹2.72 | — |
| Clothing brand | 2,564 enquiries | ₹5.43 | 640 conversations at ₹3.35 |
| Wedding photographer, Patna | — | — | Reel: 44 conversations at ₹23.16 (3.50% CTR) |
| Wedding & pre-wedding studio | 146 | — | Messaging ads at ₹32.40 (3.63% CTR) and ₹27.23 |
| Wedding film studio | 20 | ₹42.37 | — |
| Wedding photography studio | 213 | ₹62.16 | 98 conversations at ₹43.79 |
| Wedding photography studio, Patna | 487 | ₹65.26 | 183 conversations at ₹43.43 |
| Interiors business | 2 | ₹423 | — |
Two lessons stand out. In two of the wedding accounts the best ad cost roughly a third less than the account average, and some offers simply don't suit a casual chat. The interiors result is in the table on purpose; we'll come back to it.
Why are WhatsApp ads usually cheaper than other formats?
Because they remove almost every step between interest and contact. A website visit asks people to wait for a page, read, decide and fill a form. A WhatsApp ad asks them to tap once and send a pre-written message.
That low friction helps in three ways:
- More people complete the action, so Meta finds more conversions per rupee and can optimise faster.
- People feel in control. Asking a question on WhatsApp feels less committal than handing over details on a form.
- It's a familiar place. Prospects already chat with friends, family and shops there.
The flip side is that a conversation isn't a qualified lead. Some people just want a price. Your replies decide how many become customers.
How do you set up a click-to-WhatsApp campaign?
Connect a WhatsApp Business number to your Facebook Page, choose a messaging conversion location in Ads Manager, and write a pre-filled opening message. The whole setup takes under an hour if your business accounts are already in order.
- Prepare the number. Use the WhatsApp Business app (free) or the WhatsApp Business Platform, often called the API, for teams and automation. Use a number someone actually monitors.
- Link it to your Page. In Meta Business Suite or your Page settings, connect the WhatsApp account. Link Instagram too, so ads can run there.
- Choose the objective. In Ads Manager, pick the objective that matches what you want: Engagement or Leads for enquiries, Sales if you sell directly in chat. Set the conversion location to messaging apps and select WhatsApp.
- Set the audience. Start with your service area and broad targeting. Meta's delivery system usually finds responsive people better than narrow interest stacks, especially once it has some conversations to learn from.
- Use automatic placements to begin with, then review which placements produce real enquiries.
- Write the message template. Add a greeting and a pre-filled message such as "Hi, I'd like the price list for pre-wedding shoots". You can also add a few frequently asked questions that people tap to start the chat.
- Upload three to six creatives, including at least one vertical video.
What lowers your cost per conversation?
Creative quality and offer clarity move costs far more than bidding tweaks. Here's what has made the biggest difference in our accounts, roughly in order of impact.
| Lever | What to do | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Vertical video (Reels) | Show real work, real people, in the first three seconds | Reels creatives often had the highest CTR in our accounts |
| A specific offer | "Price list for bridal makeup" beats "Contact us" | People know exactly what they'll get by messaging |
| Pre-filled message | Write the first message for them | Removes the blank-screen hesitation |
| Creative variety | Several distinct ads per ad set | Lets the system find standouts like the ₹3.35 clothing ad |
| Broad targeting | Location plus minimal restrictions | Gives the algorithm room to find responders |
| Fresh creative monthly | Replace ads as their costs climb | Audiences tire of the same ad |
| Local language | Test Hindi, regional languages or Hinglish copy | Speaks the way your buyers actually talk |
Bold claims and discounts can lower costs too, but they attract bargain hunters. Test them carefully and judge by how many chats become bookings.
What should happen after someone messages you?
Reply within minutes, ask one qualifying question, and move serious buyers to a call or booking quickly. A cheap conversation that waits three hours for a reply is wasted money.
A simple reply routine:
- Instant greeting. Set an automatic greeting that confirms you've received the message and says when a person will reply.
- Quick replies for common questions. Prices, packages, availability, location. The WhatsApp Business app supports saved quick replies.
- One qualifying question early. Date, budget, location or the specific service they need.
- Labels. Tag chats as "new", "quoted", "follow up" and "booked" so nothing falls through.
- A clear next step. A call, a site visit, an advance payment link or a booking form.
If several people handle chats, or volume is high, the WhatsApp Business Platform lets you use a shared inbox, chatbots and CRM integration. Message charges and setup costs apply, so check Meta's current WhatsApp pricing before you switch.
How do you measure real results, not just conversations?
Ads Manager counts conversations started; you need to count enquiries, qualified leads and bookings yourself. Meta can't see inside a WhatsApp chat unless you connect the Business Platform and send events back.
Practical tracking for small teams:
- Use a distinct pre-filled message per campaign ("Hi, I saw your Reel about...") so you can tell sources apart.
- Keep a simple sheet: date, campaign, qualified (yes/no), booked (yes/no), value.
- Calculate cost per booking weekly, not just cost per conversation.
- Compare formats. Lead forms may cost more per lead but suit some businesses better; our comparison of lead form ads versus messaging ads uses our own data to show when.
When are click-to-WhatsApp ads the wrong choice?
They struggle when buyers need lots of information before speaking to you, or when you can't reply quickly. The interiors account we mentioned got 2 conversations at ₹423 each. For a large, high-ticket project, a casual chat from a social ad wasn't enough reason for people to reach out; the offer needed more proof first.
Consider other formats when:
- Your service is expensive and complex, and buyers want portfolios, process and pricing before talking.
- Nobody can reply within business hours.
- You need email addresses or structured details for a sales process.
- You sell to businesses whose buyers prefer email or calls.
In those cases, a landing page with case studies or a lead form with qualifying questions often performs better. Our explainer on what a good cost per lead looks like on Meta ads in India helps you judge whether a higher cost per lead is still profitable.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need the WhatsApp Business API to run click-to-WhatsApp ads?
No. You can run these ads with the free WhatsApp Business app. The Business Platform (API) becomes useful when several people answer chats, you want automation or chatbots, or you want leads flowing into a CRM automatically.
Is ₹50 per WhatsApp conversation good or bad?
It depends on what a customer is worth. For a wedding photographer booking packages worth tens of thousands, it can be very profitable; for a ₹500 product it's far too high. Work out how many chats you need per booking and what that booking earns.
Does WhatsApp charge for conversations that start from ads?
You pay Meta for the ad itself. If you use the WhatsApp Business Platform, message charges can apply, though Meta has offered free messaging windows for conversations that begin from click-to-WhatsApp ads. Check Meta's current WhatsApp Business Platform pricing, as it changes.
Can these ads run on Instagram as well as Facebook?
Yes. Once your WhatsApp number and Instagram account are linked to your business portfolio, click-to-WhatsApp ads can run across Facebook and Instagram placements, including Reels and Stories.
How long should I run an ad before judging it?
Give a new ad set several days and enough conversations to see a pattern, ideally a week or more. Judge on cost per qualified chat and bookings, not on the first day's numbers, which are often noisy.
