Quick answer: Start with what Google gives you free: call assets that use a Google forwarding number, a forwarding number on your landing page for website call conversions, and a minimum call length so wrong numbers don't count. Move to paid dynamic number insertion (DNI) when you need per-keyword attribution, recordings or missed-call alerts, and keep your main number as the primary phone on your Google Business Profile.
An electrician in Penrith or a physio in Geelong rarely gets a tidy web form from a Google ad. The phone rings, someone asks whether you can come on Thursday, and the job is booked before anyone opens a laptop. That call made the money, yet in many small Australian accounts it never reaches the conversions column. Here's how we fix that: free tools first, paid tracking only when it earns its keep.
Why do phone calls go missing from your ad reports?
Because a call can reach you by four routes, and Google Ads only sees the ones you have deliberately connected. Many accounts track form submissions and nothing else.
- Tapping the call button on the ad. Google records this call asset only if call reporting is on and a conversion action exists.
- Tapping the number on your landing page. Google can see the tap, but not whether the call connected or how long it lasted.
- Reading the number on a desktop and dialling from a mobile. Nothing links that call to the ad unless the number shown is a tracking number.
- Calling after checking your Google Business Profile. That usually sits outside ad reporting entirely.
The gap costs more than tidy reports. Smart Bidding optimises towards whatever you count as a conversion. If only forms count, Google learns to find form-fillers, who for tradies and clinics are often a small, less urgent slice of the people ready to book. Unrecorded calls also make profitable campaigns look weak, which is how good ones get switched off. For the wider system, see our guide to ads, landing pages and tracking.
What can Google Ads track for free with call assets and forwarding numbers?
Calls from ads, calls from your website after an ad click, and taps on your number, all without a third-party tool. Australia is on Google's list of countries where Google forwarding numbers are available, per Google Ads Help.
| Conversion type | What it measures | What you need | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calls from ads | Calls placed from a call asset | Call reporting on, a Google forwarding number | Only calls that start on the ad |
| Calls to a number on your website | Calls from visitors who arrived through an ad | Google tag plus a number-swap snippet | Ad visitors only, not organic or social |
| Clicks on your number | Taps on a tel: link on mobile | A click trigger in the Google tag or Tag Manager | A tap isn't a connected call |
| Imported calls | Calls tracked elsewhere and matched back | Caller details or click IDs from your system | Needs a regular upload |
With call reporting on, Google shows call start time, duration and, for forwarding numbers, the caller's area code. By default it counts a call as a conversion once it lasts longer than 60 seconds, and you can change that per conversion action. Set phone conversions to count "one" per click, so a customer who rings three times about one job isn't three leads.
On a lean account, this free layer is often enough to start bidding properly. Our guide to Google Ads on a small budget explains why clean conversion data matters even more when spend is modest.
When do you need paid call tracking with dynamic number insertion?
When you need to know which keyword, campaign or channel produced each call across all your marketing, not only Google ads.
DNI gives each website visitor a number from a pool, swapped in by a script according to how they arrived: Google ad, organic search, Meta ad or email. When they ring, the provider knows the session behind the number and can pass the source, keyword and click ID onwards. Australian providers include WildJar, Delacon and CallRail, among others, and most can supply local, 1300 and 1800 numbers. Paid tools typically add recordings, missed-call alerts by SMS, whisper messages that announce "Google Ads caller" before connecting, and integrations with GA4 and common CRMs.
Signs you've outgrown the free layer:
- You run Google Ads, SEO and Meta together and can't tell which makes the phone ring
- Many visitors browse on desktop and dial from their mobiles
- You want recordings to coach whoever answers the phone
- After-hours calls go unanswered and need a callback routine
- You're comparing lead sources, such as hipages vs Google Ads, and need like-for-like numbers
Pricing depends on pool size and call minutes, so ask for a monthly figure covering numbers, minutes and recordings before signing.
How do you count real calls and not ten-second wrong numbers?
Combine a duration threshold with outcome tags, then let only qualified calls drive bidding. Duration alone is blunt: a 70-second call might be someone selling directory listings, while a 45-second one might be a customer booking a gas fitting.
- Listen first. For a fortnight, review recordings or notes and see how long genuine enquiries run.
- Set the threshold from your own calls. Lower Google's 60-second default if bookings are quick; raise it if short spam calls are common.
- Tag outcomes in your call tracking tool or job management software.
- Split conversion actions. Keep "calls over threshold" as secondary, for observation, and make "booked job" primary once data flows.
| Outcome tag | Count as a conversion? | Example |
|---|---|---|
| New enquiry, booked | Yes, highest value | Hot water replacement booked for Friday |
| New enquiry, quote requested | Yes | Bathroom renovation, site visit to arrange |
| Existing customer | No | Question about an invoice |
| Spam or wrong number | No | Advertising pitch, silent call |
How do you send booked jobs from calls back to Google Ads?
Record the outcome where you already manage jobs, then import it as an offline conversion linked to the original call or click. That shifts bidding from "people who call" to "people who become customers".
- Calls through Google forwarding numbers. Google Ads lets you import call conversions using the caller's number and call start time.
- A DNI provider. Most store the click ID (GCLID) with each call; mark a call "booked" and the provider can send the conversion for you.
- Your CRM or job software. Keep the call's source details on the job record and upload on a schedule.
Upload at least weekly, ideally daily, so bidding learns while clicks are recent, and attach a value, even an average, so Google can tell a $300 repair from a $15,000 renovation. Our Google Ads conversion tracking guide covers the website side.
Will call tracking numbers hurt your Google Business Profile or NAP consistency?
Not if your main number stays primary wherever your business identity is defined and tracking numbers stay on ads and your website. Consistent name, address and phone details help Google trust a local listing.
- Keep your real number as the primary phone on Google Business Profile and directories such as True Local and Yellow Pages.
- Use DNI so your page's underlying HTML and structured data keep the main number; only visitors see the swap.
- Don't print tracking numbers on vans or signage unless you'll keep them for years.
Recordings need care too. Rules differ between states and territories, and federal law also covers phone calls, so play a short "calls may be recorded" message and take legal advice before using recordings beyond training.
Frequently asked questions
Can Google Ads track phone calls for free?
Yes. Call assets with Google forwarding numbers, website call conversions and click-to-call tracking are built into Google Ads at no extra cost. The limitation is scope: Google only tracks callers who arrived through your ads.
What is dynamic number insertion?
It's a script that shows each website visitor a number from a pool, chosen by how they arrived. When they ring, the provider knows which source, campaign and keyword produced the call and passes that to your ad platforms and CRM.
Will a call tracking number hurt my local SEO?
Not when set up properly. Keep your main number as the primary phone on Google Business Profile and directories, and let DNI change only the number visitors see, not the number in your page code.
How long should a call be to count as a lead?
Google's 60-second default is a sensible start. Review a fortnight of real calls and adjust: quick booking calls may justify a lower threshold, heavy spam a higher one.
Is it legal to record sales calls in Australia?
It can be, provided callers are told, but the rules vary across states and territories and federal law also applies. Use a clear recorded announcement on every call, and check your state's position with a lawyer if recordings matter to your business.
