Quick answer: Branding in India is priced by what you take away, not by the logo itself. A logo-only job is the cheapest tier; an identity kit with colours, fonts, usage rules and templates costs more because it covers far more decisions and files; strategy-led branding with positioning, naming and voice costs the most. Add 18% GST if the designer is registered, and insist on vector source files and a written copyright assignment.
Logo prices in India stretch from marketplace listings cheaper than a takeaway dinner to studio projects that cost as much as a website. Both ends are genuine offers. They're simply selling different things: one sells a file, the other sells a system and the thinking behind it.
So rather than quote a single number that would mislead half our readers, this guide shows what each tier of branding should include, what pushes a quote up or down, and how to brief a designer so you pay for design rather than for rounds of guesswork.
What's the difference between a logo, a brand identity and a brand strategy?
A logo is the mark, an identity is the system around it, and a strategy is the reasoning that tells the system what to say.
| Logo | Brand identity | Brand strategy | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A wordmark, symbol or both | Logo plus colours, type, imagery style and usage rules | Positioning, audience, personality, naming and voice |
| Answers | "What do we put on the signboard?" | "How do we look consistent everywhere?" | "Why should anyone choose us?" |
| Main output | Logo files | A brand guide and templates | A strategy document and messaging |
| Good for | Very early businesses with tiny budgets | Most small businesses launching or relaunching | Businesses entering a crowded market or renaming |
We've written a short piece on brand identity vs a logo if you want the distinction in a nutshell.
How much does a logo cost in India?
Logo prices depend on who designs it, how much research happens before sketching, and what you receive at the end. Use these drivers to understand why quotes differ:
| Cost driver | Cheaper when | Costlier when |
|---|---|---|
| Designer | Marketplace seller or junior freelancer | Experienced designer or studio |
| Research | None; straight to design | Competitor review, audience questions, a short workshop |
| Concepts | One idea, tweaked | Two or three distinct directions explored |
| Revision rounds | Unlimited small tweaks | A defined number of meaningful rounds |
| Files | A PNG and a JPG | Vector masters, colour variants, icon and social versions |
| Rights | Unclear | Copyright assigned to your business in writing |
| Extras | Nothing | Trademark search support, favicon, profile images |
The bottom of the market is cheap because it skips almost everything in the right-hand column. That can be acceptable for a stopgap. It isn't acceptable for a mark you plan to put on vans, packaging and a trademark application.
What does a full brand identity package cost?
An identity package costs more than a logo because every element is a separate piece of work, so price it line by line. Ask designers to itemise these components:
- Logo system: primary logo, a simplified version, a symbol or monogram, and versions for dark and light backgrounds
- Colour palette: codes for screen (HEX and RGB) and print (CMYK, and Pantone if you print packaging)
- Typography: chosen fonts with the right licences for web, print and apps
- Usage guide: spacing, minimum sizes, what not to do, examples
- Templates: social posts, visiting cards, letterhead, invoices, presentation slides
- Digital sizes: favicon, WhatsApp and social profile images, email signature
- Image direction: guidance on photography style, so future shoots match
Colour and type carry more of the identity than most owners expect. Our guides to choosing colours that build trust and typography that looks credible show why those two lines deserve real attention.
Font licensing is a hidden cost worth asking about. Google Fonts are free for commercial use under open licences, but many premium fonts are licensed separately for desktop, web and app use. Ask whose name the licence will be in.
What should each branding tier include?
Use this as a checklist when comparing quotes; anything missing should be either added or priced.
| Deliverable | Logo only | Identity kit | Strategy-led |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brief or discovery questionnaire | Short | Yes | In-depth workshop |
| Concept directions | 1–2 | 2–3 | 2–3, tied to the strategy |
| Vector source files (AI, SVG, EPS or PDF) | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Colour codes for screen and print | Basic | Full | Full |
| Fonts with licences | Named only | Licensed | Licensed |
| Brand usage guide | No | Yes | Yes, extended |
| Templates and digital sizes | No | Yes | Yes |
| Positioning, naming, tone of voice | No | No | Yes |
| Written copyright assignment | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Notice the last row. Every tier, even the cheapest, should transfer ownership of the final mark to you.
Do you need branding before you build a website?
You need a minimum identity kit before the website, not the full system. That means final logo files, two or three brand colours, one or two fonts and a few basic rules. With those, a designer can build a site that looks deliberate.
The rest can follow without delaying launch: templates, an extended guide and photography direction. Waiting months for a perfect brand book before building the site usually costs more in lost enquiries than it saves.
If you're budgeting for both, our guide to website cost in India covers the site side, and GRWW can scope branding and website design together so the two are briefed once. A clear written brief helps either way; our website brief template covers what to send.
How do you brief a designer to avoid paying for extra rounds?
Most extra rounds come from feedback the designer could have had on day one. Put these in your brief:
- What the business does, in two sentences, and who buys from you
- Three competitors, and what you want to look different from
- Three brands you admire (from any industry) and why
- Three words the brand should feel like, and three it shouldn't
- Where the logo will appear: signboard, packaging, app icon, uniforms, social
- Anything fixed: an existing colour, a name style, a symbol with meaning
- The full list of deliverables and file formats you expect
- Who approves the work, so feedback comes from one voice
- How many concepts and revision rounds the quote includes
Then consolidate feedback. One clear document per round beats a stream of WhatsApp messages from five people.
What are the red flags in cheap logo offers?
Walk away when the price is low because the work and the rights are missing.
- Stock icons. Marketplace logos often reuse stock symbols that others can buy too, which makes the mark hard to protect.
- No source files. Only a JPG and PNG means you'll pay again the first time a printer asks for a vector file.
- "Unlimited revisions" with no concept stage. Endless tweaks on a single idea rarely beat two or three properly explored directions.
- No written transfer of rights. Without it, ownership of the mark is unclear.
- No trademark awareness. Designers rarely include legal clearance. Before finalising, run a basic search yourself on IP India's public trademark search, and speak to a trademark attorney if your name or mark is central to the business.
Frequently asked questions
Should I trademark my logo in India?
If the name or mark will carry real value, yes. Search IP India's public records first, then file in the classes covering your goods or services. Filing fees are charged per class and are lower for individuals, startups and small enterprises; check IP India's current fee schedule before applying.
How many logo concepts should a designer show?
Two or three distinct directions is a healthy number. Fewer gives you little real choice; many more usually means none of them was developed properly. Each concept should be shown in use, on a signboard, a phone screen or packaging, not just on a white page.
Do I own the copyright to my logo after paying for it?
Not automatically. Under India's Copyright Act, the creator of a work is generally its first owner unless they made it as your employee, and an assignment must be in writing. Ask for a signed assignment of copyright in the final logo as part of the deliverables.
Can I build my website before my branding is final?
You can start, but don't launch on placeholder branding. Wireframes, content and page structure can be prepared while the identity is finalised. Visual design should begin once the logo, colours and fonts are approved.
Is GST charged on logo and branding design?
Yes. Design services attract 18% GST when the designer is GST-registered. Freelancers below the registration threshold may not charge it, which is one reason quotes differ. If your business is registered, you can usually claim the GST as input tax credit.
