Quick answer: A handful of listings still matter. Claim Google Business Profile first, then Justdial, Sulekha, Bing Places, Apple Maps and a Facebook page, plus the platform your customers actually use, such as Practo, Zomato, IndiaMART or a property portal. Keep the name, address and phone identical on every one; ten accurate listings do more than three hundred junk citations.
Try searching your own phone number on Google. If you've been in business for a few years, you'll probably find listings you never created: an old address on one directory, a former employee's mobile on another, a second profile with your name spelt differently. Each one confuses customers, search engines and AI assistants about who you are and how to reach you. This guide covers which Indian listing sites deserve your time, which don't, and how to clean up the ones already out there.
Do business listings still matter for local SEO in India?
Yes, but for different reasons than they used to. Ten years ago, SEO advice treated every directory mention as a ranking vote. Today a few listings matter a lot and most matter very little.
The ones worth having help in three ways:
- Customers use them directly. Plenty of people search Justdial for a plumber, IndiaMART for a supplier or Zomato for dinner, without ever opening Google.
- They confirm your details. Google and AI assistants cross-check your name, address and phone across sources. Matching listings make your business easier to verify.
- They carry reviews. A Practo profile with patient reviews or a Justdial page with ratings builds trust before anyone calls.
None of that requires hundreds of listings. It requires the right ones, filled in correctly.
Which listing sites are worth claiming first?
Start with Google, then the big general platforms, then the ones specific to your industry. Work down this list in order.
| Priority | Platform | Why it matters | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Google Business Profile | Drives Google Maps and local results | Every local business |
| 2 | Justdial | Widely used for local service searches; its pages often rank in Google | Services, shops, clinics |
| 3 | Sulekha | Strong for service categories and lead requests | Home services, tutors, events |
| 4 | Bing Places | Feeds Bing, Windows search and Copilot | Every local business |
| 5 | Apple Maps | Feeds Apple Maps and Siri on iPhones | Every local business |
| 6 | Facebook page and Instagram profile | Customers check them for photos, hours and reviews | Consumer-facing businesses |
| 7 | LinkedIn company page | Confirms company details for buyers and partners | B2B and professional services |
| 8 | IndiaMART, TradeIndia or ExportersIndia | Where business buyers search for suppliers | Manufacturers, traders, exporters |
Google first, because it matters most and everything else should match it. Our Google Business Profile optimisation checklist covers it field by field. Bing Places and Apple Maps take less than an hour each, and Bing can import your Google profile; the steps in our Apple Maps and Bing Places guide work the same way in India.
Platforms such as Justdial and IndiaMART sell paid plans. An accurate free listing comes first; pay for more visibility only once you've tracked whether the platform sends you real enquiries.
Which industry listings matter for doctors, restaurants, property and B2B?
Industry platforms often matter more than general directories, because that's where your customers already compare options.
| Industry | Platforms to prioritise | What to get right |
|---|---|---|
| Doctors, dentists and clinics | Practo | Each doctor's qualifications, consultation timings and clinic address |
| Restaurants and cafés | Zomato, Swiggy | Menu, photos, hours and delivery areas; match the address to Google |
| Property brokers and developers | 99acres, MagicBricks, Housing.com | Consistent firm name, office address and RERA registration details where they apply |
| Manufacturers and exporters | IndiaMART, TradeIndia, ExportersIndia | Product categories, GST details, factory or office address |
| Wedding vendors | WedMeGood and similar wedding directories | Portfolio, packages and service cities |
If your industry has a dominant platform, treat it like a second Google profile: complete every field, add real photos and reply to reviews.
How do you keep your name, address and phone consistent?
Write one master version of your business details and copy it exactly onto every listing. Small differences, such as "Rd" versus "Road" or a landline on one site and a mobile on another, make it harder for systems to match listings to the same business.
Decide on each element once:
- Name. Exactly as on your signage and GST registration, without added keywords.
- Address. Building, floor, street, landmark, locality, city and PIN code. Decide whether to include the landmark, then always include it, or never.
- Phone. One primary number, written the same way (for example, with +91) everywhere. Choose landline or mobile and stick with it.
- Website. The same full URL, with or without www, on every listing.
- Hours. Including weekly closing days and festival closures.
Keep the master copy in a shared document so whoever updates a listing uses the same text. For how consistency fits into the wider picture, our guide to SEO basics for service businesses covers the on-site side.
Should you pay for "300 citations" packages?
No. These gigs submit your business to hundreds of directories that almost nobody visits. They add little to rankings and can cause lasting mess.
The problems:
- Most of the sites have no real users and little standing with search engines.
- Listings are often created with inconsistent details you can't edit later, because you don't hold the logins.
- Some directories are spammy enough that you'd rather not be associated with them.
- When you move or change your number, you're left with hundreds of outdated entries.
Spend the same money on a better website, real photos or a few months of tracked ads on a platform your customers actually use.
Do listings help you appear in AI answers and Google AI Mode?
Yes, indirectly. AI assistants and Google's AI Mode cross-check businesses against listings and reviews, so consistent details make you a safer recommendation.
When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or AI Mode for "a good physiotherapist in Indiranagar", the answer is assembled from sources the system trusts: Google profiles, websites, directories and review sites. If your details agree everywhere and reviews mention the services you offer, you're easier to recommend. If three listings show three different addresses, you're a risk. How do you find and fix old or duplicate listings?
Search for every phone number and address you've ever used, list what you find, then claim, correct or remove each entry.
- Search Google for your current and old phone numbers, old addresses and variations of your business name.
- Record every listing in a spreadsheet with its URL, the details it shows and whether you control it.
- Claim listings you don't control through each platform's "claim this business" option.
- Correct details to match your master copy.
- Where two listings exist for one location, ask the platform to merge or remove the duplicate, keeping the one with more reviews.
- Mark listings for locations you've left as moved or closed rather than leaving them active.
- Repeat the search every six months.
Frequently asked questions
Which free business listing sites are best in India?
Google Business Profile, Justdial, Sulekha, Bing Places, Apple Maps and a Facebook page cover most local businesses, all with free options. Add your industry's main platform, such as Practo, Zomato, IndiaMART or a property portal.
Does a Justdial listing help my Google ranking?
Not much directly. Its value is that Justdial pages often rank for searches like "best electrician in Indore", so an accurate listing puts you where searchers click. It also confirms your details for Google and AI tools.
How many citations does a local business need?
There's no magic number. A core set of five to ten accurate listings on platforms people actually use, plus your industry's main platform, does more than hundreds of low-quality directory entries.
What is NAP consistency?
NAP stands for name, address and phone number. Consistency means these appear in exactly the same format on your website, Google profile and every listing, so customers and search engines can be sure they all describe one business.
Should I delete duplicate business listings?
Yes, where you can. Merge or remove duplicates so each real location has one listing, keeping the version with the most reviews. On Google, report duplicates rather than creating new profiles to replace them.
