Quick answer: Boost a post when you only want more people to see something that's already working, such as a popular post or a local event. If you want enquiries, bookings or sales, use Ads Manager, where you can optimise for leads or conversions, use instant forms and your pixel, exclude existing customers and test several creatives at once.

The Boost button sits under every post on your Facebook Page and Instagram profile, and it's designed to be pressed: pick an audience, pick a budget, done in under a minute. Ads Manager looks more like a cockpit, so plenty of owners never open it. The two tools are built for different jobs, though, and using the quick one for the wrong job is behind a lot of "Facebook ads don't work for us" conversations.

What is the difference between boosting a post and using Ads Manager?

A boost is a simplified ad made from an existing post; Ads Manager is the full tool for building a campaign around a business goal. Both run through the same Meta ad system and auction, and boosted posts even show up in Ads Manager afterwards. What changes is how much you can control.

What can you control in Ads Manager that a boost hides?

Above all, you choose what Meta optimises for, and that one setting decides who sees your ad. The rest follows from it:

  • Conversion location. Send people to your website, an instant form, a Messenger, Instagram or WhatsApp chat, or a phone call.
  • Conversion events. With the pixel and Conversions API in place, Meta learns which visitors actually enquired and looks for more like them.
  • Exclusions. Stop paying to reach existing customers or people who enquired last week.
  • Creative variety. Run several images and videos in one ad set and let delivery favour the strongest. Our Meta ads creative testing framework shows how to make those tests mean something.
  • Automation, on your terms. Advantage+ campaigns hand targeting to Meta's AI, which works better when it's optimising for a real business result rather than likes.
  • Budget and schedule. Daily or lifetime budgets, start and end dates, and campaign-level budget sharing.

When is boosting a post actually the right call?

Boosting is the right tool when visibility is the whole goal. It's quick, cheap to start and good at reach. Sensible uses:

  • A post that's already performing well organically and deserves a bigger audience.
  • An event, opening or sale in your area in the next few days.
  • A new location or service announcement for people nearby.
  • Building familiarity on a very small budget before you run lead campaigns.

You can also have it both ways. When you create an ad in Ads Manager, you can choose to use an existing post, so the ad keeps its likes and comments while you get the full set of objectives and tracking.

Why do boosted posts rarely bring enquiries?

Because a boost usually asks Meta for engagement, and Meta delivers exactly that. The delivery system shows your ad to the people most likely to take the action you chose. People who like and comment often are a different group from people who fill in a form or message a business about a quote.

Engagement is also cheap to buy, which is why a boost's cost per view looks so attractive. The report fills up with reactions, while a lead campaign on the same budget usually reaches fewer people and shows a column of actual enquiries. On top of that, a boost rarely feeds conversion data back to Meta, so the system never learns which viewers turned into customers.

Signs your boosts are buying the wrong kind of attention:

  • Comments come from outside your city or service area.
  • Messages stop after "price?" and never turn into a booking.
  • Likes climb while calls, forms and walk-ins stay flat.
  • The same handful of followers react to every boosted post.

None of this means the post was bad. It means the goal you gave Meta was visibility, and visibility is what you paid for.

How do you move from boosting to a simple Ads Manager campaign?

Start with one campaign, one clear destination and a few genuinely different ads.

  1. Check the ad account sits in your own business portfolio. Our guide to ad account ownership shows how to set that up.
  2. Pick where enquiries land: an instant form, a WhatsApp or Messenger chat, or a website page with the pixel installed. Our comparison of lead forms vs messaging ads helps you choose.
  3. Create one campaign with the Leads objective, or Engagement with a messaging destination if you want chats.
  4. Target your service area with a broad or Advantage+ audience rather than stacking interests.
  5. Add two or three creatives that differ properly: a short video, a photo of real work and your best organic post.
  6. Leave it running for a week before you judge it, and avoid daily edits while it's learning.
  7. Reply to every lead quickly and note which ones are serious.

How do you judge results from either option?

Judge both on what the result you care about costs, usually an enquiry, not on reach or likes.

MetricWhat it tells youGood for judging enquiries?
Reach and impressionsHow many people saw the adNo
Likes, comments, sharesWhether people reactedNo
Click-through rateWhether the creative earns attentionPartly
Cost per resultThe price of the event you choseYes, if that event is a lead or conversation
Cost per qualified enquirySpend divided by enquiries worth following up (you work this out)Yes, the best single number

For scale, in Indian Meta accounts we manage, enquiries have cost anywhere from ₹2.72 to ₹423 each, depending on the product, offer and creative. Our guide to reading your Ads Manager report explains each column.

Frequently asked questions

Is boosting a Facebook post worth it?

For putting a proven post or local event in front of more people, yes. For leads, rarely, because the engagement goal finds people who react rather than people who buy. If enquiries matter, build the campaign in Ads Manager.

Does boosting an Instagram post use the same ad system as Ads Manager?

Yes. Boosts from the Instagram app run through Meta's ad system and auction, and you can see them in Ads Manager when the account is connected to an ad account. You get fewer settings, not a different system.

Why are boosted posts cheaper per view but worse for leads?

Engagement-optimised delivery finds people who react often, and they're cheap to reach. They rarely enquire, so the low cost per view hides a high cost per enquiry.

Can I boost a post to get WhatsApp messages?

Yes, if a WhatsApp number is connected to your Facebook Page or Instagram account, a boost can use a messages goal that opens a WhatsApp chat. For a pre-filled message, testing and better reporting, run a click-to-WhatsApp campaign in Ads Manager instead.

How much should I spend on my first Ads Manager campaign?

Enough to collect a meaningful number of results, say 15 to 20 enquiries, in the first week or two. Multiply that by a realistic cost per enquiry for your category; if you expect around ₹60 each, that's about ₹1,200 for the test, and more for higher-ticket services.
