Quick answer: Most Australian small-business websites need roughly 10–20% of their original build cost each year in maintenance. On a typical A$3,000–A$15,000 site that works out to about A$25–A$250 a month. The cheapest plans usually cover hosting only; the dearer ones add edits, reporting, SEO or conversion work.
The build invoice gets the attention, but the monthly care plan is the cost you live with. Two plans at a similar price can differ wildly: one restores your site within hours after a bad plugin update, the other only promises that backups exist somewhere. Below, we sort Australian care plans into three tiers so you can compare like with like.
What does a website care plan cover in Australia?
A care plan keeps a live website secure, backed up, updated and working, and usually includes a small allowance for edits. The exact list varies, so read the inclusions rather than the plan name.
A solid care plan normally covers:
- Hosting and SSL, ideally in an Australian data centre region so local visitors get fast pages
- Software updates for the CMS core, theme and plugins, tested before they go live
- Off-site backups kept for a stated number of days, plus occasional test restores
- Security monitoring, malware scanning and a firewall
- Uptime monitoring, with alerts when the site goes down
- Small edits, such as swapping a photo, updating hours or changing a price, capped at a set number of minutes or hours
- A monthly report showing what was updated and any issues found
What it usually leaves out: new pages or features, redesigns, copywriting, SEO campaigns, ad management and third-party licence fees. Those are quoted separately.
How much do Australian care plans cost per month?
Using GRWW's rule of thumb of 10–20% of the build cost a year, most small-business sites land somewhere between A$25 and A$250 a month. Stores and web apps sit higher because there is more to keep working.
| Site (build cost before GST) | Yearly maintenance | Roughly per month |
|---|---|---|
| Small-business site, A$3,000–A$8,000 | A$300–A$1,600 (10–20%) | A$25–A$135 |
| Custom marketing site, A$8,000–A$15,000 | A$800–A$3,000 (10–20%) | A$65–A$250 |
| E-commerce store or web app, A$15,000–A$25,000+ | A$2,250–A$6,250+ (15–25%) | A$190–A$520+ |
For stores and web apps we use the higher 15–25% range we apply to software, because payments, stock syncing, logins and integrations all need testing after updates. Our guide to planning a maintenance budget explains that range in more detail, and the build bands themselves come from our breakdown of website costs in Australia.
Treat these as planning figures, not a price list. Plans far below them are usually hosting plus automated updates; plans far above them should include real improvement hours.
What separates hosting-only, care and growth plans?
The difference is how much human attention your site gets each month. Labels vary between providers, so map each offer onto these three tiers before comparing prices.
| Tier | What it typically includes | Suits | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosting-only | Server, SSL, automated backups, sometimes automatic updates | Static sites, hosted builders, owners with in-house help | No one checks that updates didn't break forms or checkout |
| Care | Hosting plus tested updates, off-site backups, security, uptime monitoring and a small edit allowance | Most WordPress and CMS sites that bring in enquiries | Edit allowances that are tiny or don't roll over |
| Growth | Everything in care plus monthly hours for SEO, content, conversion tests or landing pages | Sites that need to grow leads, not just stay online | Hours that are hard to see value from without reporting |
Most sites that bring in enquiries belong in the care tier. Move to growth when you have a measurable target, such as more quote requests from organic search.
Which ongoing costs sit outside the plan?
Several running costs are billed separately even with a good plan, so add them before you judge the total. Check each one:
- Domain renewal. A .com.au name needs an Australian presence such as an ABN, and must be renewed on time.
- Business email. Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 charge per user, per month.
- Licences. Premium themes, plugins and form tools renew annually; Shopify apps bill monthly.
- Payment fees. Stripe, PayPal and buy now, pay later providers take a fee on each transaction.
- SEO. Ongoing SEO in Australia typically runs A$1,500–A$10,000 a month, depending on competition and scope.
- Ads. Google and Meta ad spend, plus management fees.
- Larger changes. New sections, integrations or redesigns are usually quoted as projects.
Are care plan prices GST-inclusive, and how do you compare them?
Prices advertised to consumers must show the total including GST, but quotes made only to businesses are often GST-exclusive, which can make one plan look 10% cheaper than it is. Per the ACCC's component pricing guidance, the single-total-price rule doesn't apply to representations made exclusively to businesses. Suppliers with turnover under A$75,000 don't have to register for GST at all, so a freelancer's price may genuinely have none to add.
Put every quote on the same basis, ideally GST-inclusive, then compare on substance:
| Question | What a good answer looks like |
|---|---|
| How often are updates applied? | A stated schedule, with security patches applied promptly |
| Are updates tested first? | Yes, on a staging copy or with checks afterwards |
| Where are backups kept, and for how long? | Off-site, with a stated retention period |
| When was a backup last restored as a test? | A recent date, not "we've never needed to" |
| How fast do you respond to a site outage? | A response time written into the agreement |
| How many edit minutes are included? | A clear number, and whether unused time rolls over |
| When can I reach a person? | Support during Australian business hours in your time zone |
| How do I leave? | A notice period, a full backup and all logins handed over |
If you are weighing a care plan against a site you rent outright, our comparison of website subscription plans in Australia covers that model.
When is a care plan not worth paying for?
A full care plan is hard to justify when the platform already handles updates and security, or when your site has almost nothing to update.
- Hosted builders. Squarespace, Wix and Shopify maintain the platform for you. You may only need occasional paid help.
- Static or headless sites. With no plugins and no public admin login, most routine maintenance disappears. Hosting plus ad-hoc edits is often enough.
- In-house capability. If someone on your team applies updates, checks forms and tests a backup restore each quarter, hosting-only may do.
- Unused allowances. If you never use the included edits and nothing has broken in a year, ask to drop to a lighter tier.
The opposite case is common too: a plugin-heavy WordPress site, store or booking system with nobody responsible for updates. Skipping a plan there costs more than paying for one.
What should you ask before signing a 12-month care plan?
Ask about ownership and exit before you ask about features. Some "free website plus monthly plan" deals tie the site itself to the plan, so leaving means losing the site or paying a buy-out fee.
Before signing, get written answers to:
- Is the domain registered in my business's name?
- Is the hosting account mine, or the provider's?
- If I cancel, do I get a full copy of the site and every login?
- Is there a buy-out fee or minimum term?
- How much notice do I need to give, and can prices rise mid-term?
- What counts as a "small edit", and what is billed extra?
- Who do I contact during an outage, and how quickly will they respond?
Our website handover checklist lists the logins and files to collect, whoever maintains your site. At GRWW, the finished website transfers to you on full payment, and our website care plans are optional and month-to-month, so you can stop at any time without losing the site.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a care plan if my site runs on Squarespace or Shopify?
Usually not a full one, because the platform handles hosting, security and software updates. Occasional paid help for content changes, app reviews and checking forms, tracking and checkout is often enough.
How much should hosting cost on top of a care plan?
Many care plans include hosting, so check before paying twice. If it's separate, static hosting can be very cheap, managed WordPress hosting in an Australian region costs more, and stores need more again. Ask for hosting to be itemised so you can move it.
Can I switch care providers without rebuilding my website?
Usually, yes, as long as you own the domain, hosting account and site files and have full admin access. Switching gets harder when the site sits on a provider's own builder or in their hosting account. Ask for a complete backup and every login before you give notice.
Are care plan prices in Australia quoted with GST?
Prices advertised to consumers must show the GST-inclusive total, but business-to-business quotes are often GST-exclusive. Always ask. If you're registered for GST, you can generally claim a credit for the GST you pay.
What happens to my website if I stop paying for the plan?
It depends on the contract. If you own the hosting and files, the site stays up but stops receiving updates and backups, so someone else needs to take over. If the provider owns the hosting or the site, it may go offline, which is why ownership should be settled before you sign.
