Quick answer: Digital marketing in Australia is two costs: an agency fee for the work, and ad spend paid straight to Google or Meta. Ongoing SEO, including local SEO for small businesses, usually runs A$1,500–A$10,000 a month, with a single-location business in a modest market towards the lower end. A small-business website costs A$3,000–A$8,000. Ad spend should come from your break-even cost per lead, not a package.

Most Australian small businesses asking about marketing costs want to know three things: what they'll pay an agency each month, how much goes to Google and Meta on top, and whether local SEO is worth it alongside ads. This guide answers each one, using the price bands we publish and real campaign results from accounts we run.

What are you paying for: the agency or the ads?

The agency fee covers people's time; ad spend is what Google and Meta charge to show your ads. Keep them on separate lines of any quote, because they scale differently and only one of them is the agency's income.

  • Agency fee: strategy, tracking, campaign builds, creative, SEO work, reporting and account management, usually a fixed monthly amount for an agreed scope.
  • Ad spend: billed by Google or Meta to your own ad account and card. It moves with your budget.
  • One-off setup: a new website, landing pages, conversion tracking or a photo and video shoot, billed once.

GST is 10% in Australia, so check whether each figure on a quote includes it. And insist the Google Ads, Meta, Analytics and Business Profile accounts sit in your name, with the agency added as a partner or manager. Our guide to choosing a performance marketing agency covers why ownership matters and the other questions worth asking.

How much does each digital marketing service cost in Australia?

Websites and SEO sit in fairly stable price bands; ads management, social and content are priced on scope; ad spend is yours to set.

The website comes first because ads, SEO and your Business Profile all send people to it, and local SEO foundations such as service pages, speed and structured data are cheaper to build in at launch than to bolt on later. Our website cost guide for Australia breaks down what each tier includes.

How much does local SEO cost for a small business?

Local SEO usually sits inside the same A$1,500–A$10,000 a month band as other ongoing SEO. Where you land depends on how many locations you serve, how competitive your category is and how much content and review work is needed.

Your situationWhere you'll usually sit in the A$1,500–A$10,000 rangeMain focus of the work
One location, one main service, modest competition (a suburban tradie or clinic)Lower endBusiness Profile, reviews, core service pages, citations
One location in a competitive category or a major cityMiddleAll of the above, plus more service content and authority building
Several locations or a wide service area, strong competitionUpper endSeparate profiles and pages per location, reviews at scale, reporting by location

A month of local SEO should produce visible work, not just a report. Expect:

  • Google Business Profile upkeep: accurate categories, services and service areas, regular photos and posts, and calls and direction requests tracked.
  • A review system: a simple, consistent way to ask every happy customer, plus prompt replies to every review, good or bad.
  • Citation consistency: the same business name, address and phone number across the directories that matter in your industry.
  • Service and area pages with substance: real detail about the job, the area and past work, not the same page with the suburb name swapped.
  • Technical basics: LocalBusiness structured data, page speed and mobile usability.
  • Reporting on enquiries: calls, forms and bookings from search, not just ranking positions.

The same signals now feed AI assistants. When someone asks ChatGPT or Google's AI Mode for "the best electrician near me", the answer leans on map listings, review text and your own site. Our guide to getting recommended by AI assistants for local searches shows how to make those sources agree.

Setting up your Business Profile and asking for reviews needs time, not money, so you can start there yourself. Pay for the parts that need skill or consistency: content, technical fixes and competitive categories.

How much should you spend on Google and Meta ads?

Start from what a lead is worth to you, then check the budget is large enough for the platform to learn.

The break-even formula:

Break-even cost per lead = profit per new customer × lead-to-customer rate

If a new customer brings A$2,000 profit and one in five leads becomes a customer, you can pay up to A$400 per lead before a campaign loses money. Aim well below that, at around half, to leave a margin.

Then check volume. Meta's guidance is that each ad set needs roughly 50 optimisation events a week to leave its learning phase. If you expect around $25 per lead, that's about $1,250 a week on one ad set, so a business with $1,500 a month in total shouldn't split it across two platforms and five campaigns.

For a sense of real costs, a removals company we ran ads for paid roughly $13–27 per lead in a competitive market where buyers compare several quotes quickly. In that kind of market, speed of reply and clear pricing mattered more than ad tweaks.

These are the structures we use by monthly ad spend. Our allocation guide sets them in US dollars, ad spend only, excluding management fees; the shape matters more than the exact threshold.

Monthly ad spend (USD)Suggested structure
Under US$1,000One platform only, one or two campaigns
US$1,000–US$3,000Main platform gets 75–85%; a small test or retargeting on the second
US$3,000–US$10,000Both platforms with clear jobs: prospecting on one, search capture or retargeting on the other
US$10,000+Full funnel on both, plus measured tests of Performance Max or Advantage+

Which platform first? If customers search with urgency ("plumber open now", "emergency locksmith"), lean heavily towards Google Search. If the decision is visual or the demand doesn't exist yet, lean towards Meta. Our guide to splitting ad spend between Meta and Google gives starting splits by business type and rules for moving money.

What does ads management include?

A fair management fee buys tracking, testing and decisions every month. Compare scopes before you compare prices.

A sound scope includes:

  • Conversion tracking checked before launch, so you measure calls and forms, not clicks.
  • Campaign structure matched to your budget, with tight keyword lists on Google when conversion data is thin.
  • Creative and ad copy testing, with fresh ads as performance fades.
  • Lead routing so enquiries reach you fast, plus reporting on qualified leads and jobs won.
  • Budget moved in 10–20% steps once a difference has held for about two weeks.

Agencies charge in four main ways:

Fee modelHow it worksWatch out for
Fixed monthly retainerFlat fee for an agreed scopeWhat's included: campaigns, creatives, reports
Percentage of ad spendFee rises with your budgetAn incentive to push spend up; usually a minimum fee
Pay per leadYou pay per lead deliveredPressure towards cheap, poor-quality leads
HybridBase fee plus a bonus on agreed outcomes"Qualified" defined in writing

Running both Google and Meta takes more management than one, which is one more reason to start focused. Our ads and lead generation service shows how we scope this work.

What do social media and content cost?

Both are priced by output, so compare exactly what gets made. Eight static posts a month and twenty short videos plus daily replies are very different jobs at very different prices.

Ask every provider how many posts and videos you'll get each month, who films them, whether comment and message replies are included, and whether the best organic posts can be reused as ads.

Organic social builds trust, because people check your Instagram or Facebook page before they call, but for most small businesses it isn't a dependable lead source on its own. If leads are the goal, fund SEO and ads first. For SEO content, a few genuinely useful service pages and guides beat a weekly stream of thin posts.

What should you budget at each business size?

The smaller the budget, the narrower the focus. One strong website, one ad platform and a well-run Business Profile beat a little of everything.

Business stageWhat to fundHow to structure ads
New business or sole traderSmall-business website (A$3,000–A$8,000), Business Profile, reviews, trackingOne platform, one or two campaigns
Established single-location businessWebsite improvements, local SEO towards the lower end of A$1,500–A$10,000/month, one main ad platformMain platform gets 75–85%; a small test or retargeting on the second
Growing business with a sales teamCustom website (A$8,000–A$15,000), SEO, content, both ad platformsClear jobs: search capture on Google, prospecting or retargeting on Meta
Multi-location or e-commerceE-commerce or web-app build (A$15,000–A$25,000+), SEO per location, contentFull funnel on both, with measured tests of automated campaign types

Whatever the size, expect the first month to be setup and testing, with steadier numbers from around month two or three. Judge every channel on cost per job won, not cost per click.

How do you tell whether a quote is good value?

A good quote is clear about what's measured and who owns it. The cheapest one often costs more later through slow templates, no tracking and a rebuild within a year.

Look for fees, ad spend and setup on separate lines with GST shown, tracking fixed before spend starts, reports built on enquiries and jobs won, and a named person on your account. Walk away from guaranteed rankings or lead numbers, agency-owned accounts, and six-to-twelve-month lock-ins before anything is proven.

Frequently asked questions

How much does digital marketing cost per month in Australia?

It depends on the mix. Ongoing SEO usually runs A$1,500–A$10,000 a month, ads management is a separate fee scoped to the campaigns involved, and ad spend is paid to Google or Meta on top. Set the ad budget from your break-even cost per lead rather than a round number.

How much does local SEO cost for a small business in Australia?

Local SEO usually falls within the A$1,500–A$10,000 a month range for ongoing SEO. A single-location business in a modest market sits towards the lower end; several locations or a highly competitive category push it higher. Some groundwork, like service pages and structured data, is best built into the website itself.

Should I start with local SEO or Google Ads?

If you need enquiries this month, Google Ads gets you in front of searchers quickly while you pay for every click. Local SEO takes longer to build but keeps producing enquiries without a per-click cost. Many service businesses start ads for immediate leads and build local SEO alongside them.

Is ad spend included in the agency's monthly fee?

It shouldn't be. Google and Meta should bill ad spend to your own account, and the agency fee should be a separate line. If a quote bundles them, ask for the split so you know how much actually reaches the platforms.

Does GST apply to digital marketing in Australia?

Yes. GST is 10%, and a GST-registered agency will add it to its fees. Check whether each quote is GST-inclusive or exclusive, and check how tax appears on your Google and Meta invoices when you set an ad budget.

Can I do local SEO myself?

You can handle the basics: claim and complete your Google Business Profile, keep your details consistent and ask every happy customer for a review. Outside help pays off for content, technical fixes and competitive categories, where steady monthly work makes the difference.
