How to Get Your Brand Recommended by ChatGPT

How to get your brand recommended by ChatGPT: audit what it says now, allow OAI-SearchBot, state what you do clearly, earn mentions and track referrals.

ChatGPT recommends brands it can find and trust. To be one of them, let OpenAI's search crawler reach your site, describe what you do in one consistent sentence everywhere, publish pages that answer "which provider should I choose?" honestly, earn reviews and mentions on independent sites, and test what ChatGPT says about you every month.

No one can switch on a recommendation for you. But most businesses that ChatGPT ignores are missing basics they can fix within weeks. This guide walks through them in order.

How does ChatGPT decide which brands to mention?

It either answers from what it learned during training or searches the web and cites what it finds. Which route it takes depends on the question, the user's settings and whether fresh information is needed.

RouteWhere the answer comes fromHow fast you can influence itWhat helps
Training memoryPatterns from text the model was trained on, up to its cut-off dateSlowly, over months or model updatesConsistent mentions of your brand across many credible sites
Live web searchPages retrieved at the time of the question, shown with citationsWithin weeks of a page being indexedCrawlable, specific pages and strong third-party signals

Recommendation questions such as "best wedding photographer in Patna" or "affordable CRM developer for a small business" very often trigger a search, because the answer depends on current, local information. That is good news: it is the route you can affect fastest.

Answers also vary. The same prompt can produce different brands for different users, on different days, or with slightly different wording. Aim to appear consistently, not every single time.

Step 1: What does ChatGPT say about you right now?

Start with an audit, because you cannot improve what you have not measured. Run a fixed set of prompts and record exactly what comes back.

Use a fresh chat (ideally with memory turned off) and try prompts in these groups:

Prompt typeExampleWhat to record
Category recommendation"Who are good [service] providers in [city]?"Are you named? Who is named instead?
Problem-led"How do I [problem your service solves]?"Is your business or content cited?
Comparison"[Your brand] vs [competitor]"Is the comparison accurate and fair?
Brand facts"What does [your brand] do and where?"Are services, locations and prices correct?
Pricing"How much does [service] cost in [city]?"Is your pricing page cited?

Save the answers and the sources ChatGPT cites. The cited sources tell you which sites it currently trusts in your category, which is often more useful than the answer itself.

Step 2: Can ChatGPT actually reach your website?

ChatGPT search relies on OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and on third-party search indexes, so you need to be open to both. OpenAI states that sites blocking OAI-SearchBot will not appear in ChatGPT search answers.

Check these:

  • robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot. ChatGPT-User, which fetches pages when a user asks ChatGPT to visit a link, should usually be allowed too.
  • GPTBot is a separate crawler that collects training data. Allowing it is a choice; for most marketing sites the visibility benefit outweighs the concern.
  • Firewalls and bot protection on your host or CDN are not silently blocking these crawlers.
  • Bing indexing. Register your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap. Because ChatGPT search draws on third-party search providers, a site Bing cannot see is at a disadvantage.
  • Readable HTML. Make sure your key text is present in the page source, not only rendered later by scripts.

Step 3: Is it obvious what your business is?

AI tools recommend brands they can place confidently in a category, for a type of customer, in a location. Vague positioning makes that hard.

Write one plain sentence that answers "what, for whom, where", and use it consistently. For example: "GRWW is a website, custom software, AI and performance-marketing agency working with clients in India, Australia, the USA and Europe."

Then make sure the same description appears on:

  • Your homepage and About page, near the top.
  • Your Google Business Profile and other directory listings.
  • LinkedIn, Instagram and other social profiles.
  • Partner sites, association listings and press mentions where you can influence the wording.

Inconsistent descriptions make AI tools hedge or leave you out. If one site calls you a "digital agency", another a "software house" and a third an "IT consultancy", the model has no clear category to put you in.

Step 4: Do you have pages that match recommendation questions?

People ask ChatGPT to help them choose, so publish the pages that help people choose. Most business websites describe services but never address the decision itself.

Pages that tend to get cited for recommendation prompts:

  • Pricing explainers with honest ranges and what changes the price.
  • Comparison pages: your approach versus the alternatives, including when the alternative is better.
  • "Who this is for" sections that name the customers you suit and those you do not.
  • Location or industry pages, but only where you genuinely serve that place or sector with distinct content. Thin templated pages create spam risk; GRWW noindexed 167 of its own templated city pages for that reason.
  • Detailed case studies described by industry and city, with specific outcomes.

Write them answer-first, with question-style headings and tables. The same structure helps in Google, as we explain in how to optimise for Google AI Mode.

Step 5: What do other sites say about you?

Independent mentions are among the strongest signals you can earn, because ChatGPT, like a careful person, trusts what others say more than what you say about yourself. Look at which sources it cited in your Step 1 audit and work towards being present there.

Where mentions usually come from:

  • Reviews on Google and on the platforms specific to your industry.
  • Directories and marketplaces that rank for your category.
  • Industry associations, suppliers and partners who list the businesses they work with.
  • Local and trade press, podcasts and webinars where you share real expertise.
  • Community discussions where your customers ask for recommendations. Take part as yourself and be useful; do not post fake recommendations.

Perplexity behaves similarly, with even more visible citations; our explainer on how Perplexity chooses its sources covers the differences. If the idea of earning citations rather than rankings is new to you, start with what generative engine optimisation is and how it differs from SEO.

Step 6: What proof can you publish that nobody else has?

Original figures from your own work give ChatGPT a reason to cite you specifically. Generic advice can come from anywhere; your data can only come from you.

As an example, GRWW publishes anonymised results from the Meta ad accounts it manages. One wedding photographer in Patna had a best-performing Reel ad that produced 44 conversations at ₹23.16 each with a 3.50% click-through rate, and across accounts Reels creatives often had the highest click-through rates. That is the kind of specific, attributable detail an AI tool can quote when someone asks how well Reels ads work for photographers.

Your equivalents might be typical project timelines, average response times, the most common customer questions, or before-and-after results. State the period, sample and method so the numbers can be trusted.

Step 7: What if ChatGPT gets your details wrong?

Fix the sources, not the chatbot. ChatGPT has no form for editing facts about your business, so correct the information it is likely drawing from.

  • Update your own site first, with the correct facts stated plainly.
  • Correct outdated directory listings, old social bios and partner pages.
  • If an old domain or page still ranks with wrong information, redirect or update it. GRWW found canonical tags pointing at an old domain on its own site and fixed them, so search engines would treat the current pages as the real ones.
  • Use the feedback buttons in ChatGPT to flag inaccurate answers.

Corrections show up fastest in answers that use live search. Information from training data changes only when models are updated.

Step 8: How do you track whether it is working?

Repeat your Step 1 audit monthly and watch your analytics for ChatGPT referrals. Together they show both visibility and value.

  • Referral traffic: OpenAI adds a source tag, utm_source=chatgpt.com, to links clicked in ChatGPT search, so these visits are identifiable in your analytics.
  • Prompt audit: same prompts, same conditions, every month. Track mentions, citations and accuracy.
  • Enquiry source: add "ChatGPT or another AI tool" as an option to "How did you hear about us?".
  • Branded searches: growth in people searching your name directly often follows AI mentions.

Frequently asked questions

Organic ChatGPT answers are not something you can buy a place in. Be wary of anyone selling guaranteed recommendations. The reliable route is improving your site, your reputation and the sources ChatGPT draws on.

How long does it take for ChatGPT to start mentioning my brand?

If ChatGPT searches the web for your type of question, improvements can show up within a few weeks of being indexed. Becoming part of what the model knows without searching takes much longer and depends on future model updates.

Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT recommending me?

GPTBot is for training, while OAI-SearchBot is used for ChatGPT search. Blocking only GPTBot does not remove you from search answers, but it does keep your content out of future training data, which may reduce how well the model knows your brand.

Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor and not me?

Usually because the competitor is mentioned more often on sites ChatGPT trusts, describes itself more clearly, or has pages that directly answer the question asked. Check which sources ChatGPT cited and compare your presence there.

Do reviews affect ChatGPT recommendations?

They can. Reviews on Google and industry platforms are public, independent signals about what you do and how well, and they often appear among the sources ChatGPT uses for local and service recommendations.

Should small businesses bother with ChatGPT visibility?

Yes, if customers research your type of service before buying. The work largely overlaps with good SEO and reputation building, so it rarely needs a separate budget to get started.
