Quick answer: Build Hindi or regional-language pages when your own evidence shows customers searching or calling in that language. Research Devanagari, Hinglish and English keywords separately, publish human-reviewed pages in a /hi/ folder with hreflang for hi-IN and en-IN, and write answer-first content, because Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode now respond in Hindi too.
Picture a NEET coaching institute in Patna. A parent types "पटना में NEET कोचिंग", the student types "best neet coaching patna", and an uncle asks his phone in a mix of both. Same need, three queries, three different sets of results. Most small-business websites in India answer only the English one. This guide covers when the other two are worth chasing and how to do it without filling your site with clumsy translations.
Should an Indian small business create Hindi or regional language pages?
Only if the evidence says your customers use that language when they search or enquire. Check these signals before writing a single page:
| Signal | Where to check | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Queries in Devanagari already reaching you | Search Console, with the script filter described below | Demand exists and Google already associates you with it |
| Hinglish queries | Search Console, with the word filter described below | People describe problems in Roman-script Hindi |
| Calls and WhatsApp messages in Hindi | Your phone log and chat history | Customers think and buy in Hindi |
| Competitors ranking with Hindi pages | Search your main service in Hindi | The results page rewards Hindi content |
| Your service area | Where your customers live | Hindi-belt cities and towns, or Marathi, Tamil, Bengali or other regions, point to different languages |
To run the Search Console checks, open the Performance report, add a Query filter, choose "Custom (regex)" and paste one of these patterns. The first matches any query containing Devanagari script; the second catches common Hinglish question words. Set the date range to the last 16 months so seasonal demand shows up.
\p{Devanagari}
kaise|kya|kitna|kitne|wala|wali|ke liye|sasta
Even a few dozen impressions a month on these filters tells you Google already shows your pages to Hindi searchers, usually in poor positions because the page isn't written for them.
Two or more signals justify a test with a handful of pages. None at all means your English pages deserve the effort first; our SEO basics apply in any language.
How do Hindi, Hinglish and English searches differ for the same service?
They differ in words, in script and often in intent. These illustrative examples show the pattern:
| Service | English | Hinglish (Roman script) | Hindi (Devanagari) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dentist | dentist near me | daant ka doctor near me | दांत का डॉक्टर |
| Home loan | home loan interest rate | home loan kaise le | होम लोन कैसे लें |
| AC repair | ac repair service | ac thanda nahi kar raha | एसी ठंडा नहीं कर रहा |
| Tuition | class 10 maths tuition | 10th maths tuition ghar pe | कक्षा 10 गणित ट्यूशन |
Three things stand out. Hinglish searches often describe a problem ("AC isn't cooling") rather than name a service. Devanagari searches borrow English nouns such as लोन and एसी. And words like "kaise" mark a how-to question, which needs an explanatory page, not a service page with a price list.
How do you research keywords in Devanagari and Roman script?
Start from how customers talk, then confirm with search data. Keyword tools are weak here: many report tiny or zero volumes for Hindi phrases that clearly bring enquiries.
- Collect real phrases. Read a month of WhatsApp enquiries and note how people describe their need, word for word.
- Use autocomplete in both scripts. Type the start of each phrase on a Hindi keyboard and in Roman script, and note Google's suggestions and the "People also ask" questions.
- Mine Search Console. The regex filters above show which Devanagari and Hinglish queries already trigger impressions, even if you rank poorly for them.
- Study the pages that rank. Look at what Hindi results cover, how long they are and which questions they answer.
- Check YouTube suggestions. Hindi video search is busy, and its autocomplete reveals phrasing that text tools miss.
- Group by intent, not script. "AC repair", "ac thanda nahi kar raha" and "एसी ठंडा नहीं कर रहा" may all belong to one Hindi service page plus one troubleshooting article.
How should you structure language versions and hreflang?
Give each language its own URL, tell Google how they relate, and let people switch freely.
- Separate URLs. Put Hindi pages in a /hi/ folder, for example /hi/services/ac-repair/. Don't swap languages on one URL with cookies or scripts; Google needs a crawlable page per language.
- hreflang on every version. Each page lists itself and its alternates, and the tags must be reciprocal:
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-IN" href="https://example.com/services/ac-repair/" /> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="hi-IN" href="https://example.com/hi/services/ac-repair/" /> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="x-default" href="https://example.com/services/ac-repair/" />
- No automatic redirects by location or browser language. Show a visible switcher linking each page to its equivalent and let visitors choose.
- Translate the metadata. Titles, meta descriptions and image alt text belong in Hindi on Hindi pages. Romanised slugs such as /hi/ac-repair/ are easier to share than percent-encoded Devanagari.
- Don't build a separate Hinglish version. There's no hreflang code for it. Work common Hinglish phrasing into headings and FAQs on the pages where it fits.
- Load a proper Devanagari font so text doesn't fall back to an ugly system default on budget phones.
If you're planning multilingual websites from scratch, build this structure in from day one; retrofitting it costs more. Once Hindi pages are live, confirm they're indexed; our checklist for a website not showing on Google helps when they aren't.
How do AI Overviews and AI Mode in Hindi change the picture?
Hindi queries now get synthesised answers, so clear Hindi pages can be cited the way English ones are. Google has offered AI Overviews in Hindi in India since 2024, and added Hindi to AI Mode in September 2025, letting people type or speak questions in Hindi and get answers in Hindi.
That rewards the same habits that work in English, applied in the language people actually use:
- Open each section with a direct one- or two-sentence answer in plain Hindi.
- Use question headings that mirror real queries, such as "AC ठंडा क्यों नहीं करता?"
- Cover the follow-up questions too. AI Mode splits a query into sub-questions, which is why topic clusters for AI search matter in every language.
- Keep facts specific: areas served, timings, price ranges in rupees, payment options such as UPI.
Our guide to optimising for Google AI Mode covers the mechanics. When no good Hindi page exists on a topic, the answer gets built from whatever does; a clear page of your own gives it a better option.
How do you avoid thin machine-translated pages?
Translate fewer pages, better. Google's spam policies treat mass-produced pages that add little value as scaled content abuse, and unreviewed machine translation of an entire site is one of the quickest ways to create them.
A safer plan:
- Start with five to ten pages: home, your top three to five services, contact and your most-asked questions.
- Use machine translation only as a first draft. A fluent Hindi speaker who knows your trade should rewrite it.
- Use customers' words, not textbook Hindi. If customers say "EMI", write EMI rather than a formal term nobody searches for.
- Localise, don't just translate. Mention nearby landmarks, local timings and prices in rupees.
- Assign an owner. When an English price, timing or service changes, the Hindi page changes the same day.
- Leave reviews in their original language. Translating customer reviews misrepresents what people wrote.
Before any Hindi page goes live, have the reviewer read it aloud. Sentences that sound like a government circular, terms nobody uses at the counter, and English words awkwardly forced into Devanagari all show up immediately when spoken. A page that reads naturally to a customer in Lucknow or Indore is also the kind an AI answer can quote without sounding odd.
Frequently asked questions
Is Hindi SEO worth it for a small business?
It's worth it when customers already search, call or message you in Hindi, and when Hindi results in your area are thin. Start with a few key pages and track Hindi queries and enquiries for three to six months before expanding.
Should Hindi pages use Devanagari or Hinglish?
Write Hindi pages in Devanagari, keeping the English terms customers actually use, such as EMI or booking. Capture Hinglish searches through natural phrasing in headings and FAQs rather than a separate Roman-script version.
Can I use Google Translate for Hindi pages?
As a rough first draft, yes. Publishing it unreviewed produces stiff, sometimes wrong text that customers distrust and that risks looking like low-value scaled content. Have a fluent speaker who knows your service rewrite every page.
Do I need hreflang for Hindi and English pages?
Yes, if you publish equivalent pages in both languages. Mark them as hi-IN and en-IN, make the tags reciprocal and add an x-default. It helps Google show the right version to each searcher.
Does Google AI Mode answer in Hindi?
Yes. Google added Hindi to AI Mode in September 2025, and AI Overviews have been available in Hindi in India since 2024. Clear, answer-first Hindi pages give those features something reliable to cite.
